Winter is here – can you believe it? As we get ready to kick off the second half of 2018, we thought this would be the perfect time to reflect on the last 6 months here on the Tweed Coast.
Already this year we’ve seen some exciting developments in our area, from new coffee nooks and retail precincts to park refurbishments and dining establishments.
Keep reading for a mid-year update from parts of our coastal community, including some brand new local hot spots to add to your must-visit list this winter!
What’s New: Casuarina
In April we said hello to brand new local hub, The Commons Casuarina. Already proving to be a popular neighbourhood collective, The Commons is home to a variety of unique retailers with more to be unveiled over the coming months.
Locals can enjoy boutique fashion and home-wares from Nikkou Store, sample smoked meats and craft beers at The Crafty Cow, or devour an all-vegan menu at Familiar Takeaway.
We’ve also welcomed new local cafe and daytime eatery Tucker, offering an all-day brekkie menu made from regional produce, artisan bread from Bread Social, and takeaway Blackboard coffee. Note to self…….too much of their amazing Organic Sourdough could represent a challenge come next Summer :-). Tucker – the perfect spot for a relaxed weekend brunch overlooking the courtyard, and a great new addition to our Casuarina community!
It’s great to see our café and restaurant culture evolving, and adding to the already great list of venues.
What’s New: Kingscliff
The Kingscliff foreshore has been buzzing since the highly anticipated unveiling of the Rowan Robinson Park. This extensive multi-million dollar redevelopment includes brand new amenities, seating and walkways overlooking the pristine Kingscliff beaches. Why not rug up with a picnic blanket, grab some dinner from the Marine Parade eateries and soak up our stunning winter sunsets?
Kingscliff Holiday Park has also undergone a complete refurbishment with the community hall and Lions Park renovation due to be completed over the coming months, continuing to position Kingscliff as a highly sought-after destination for both locals and visitors. This year’s Anzac service was really special overlooking the new park.
The cool winter months also mean sunflower season is back at Cudgen favourite, Farm & Co. Don’t miss your chance to see the golden sunflower patches in bloom, and pick up some organic farm-grown produce while you’re at it. You can visit Farm & Co between 8am – 4pm on weekdays, and 9am – 4pm on weekends.
The first half of 2018 has also been centered around the announcement of the new Tweed Valley hospital location, proposed for Kingscliff. Works on the $534 million dollar development are expected to commence as early as next year and completed by 2022.
What’s New: Cabarita
Just opposite the Cabarita Headland, you can now find new coffee caravan Cabana tucked away next to Diamond Beach Resort. Stroll in after your morning walk, swim or surf for takeaway Campos coffees, smoothies, snacks and acai bowls from this intimate cafe nook.
Cabarita is also playing host to the Lions Greenback Fishing Competition, now back in its 31st year after a brief hiatus. Taking place over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, this much-loved event is expected to host up to 800 entrants from across the region. You can catch all of the action beginning at Cabarita Beach from 10am on Saturday, with markets and activities for the family on Sunday.
That’s a wrap on the first half of 2018! We’re excited to see how these recent developments will continue to grow our coastal communities, with plenty more to expect in the second half of the year.
